Kearney Donnovan was born to the parents of Betha and Aurthur Donnovan in 1117. At the time, they were living in Ireland. Hardships brought their family to Germany a few years later, when Kearney was just a small child. Famine had struck the small village which they lived, and forced them to move on. They settled in another small village in Germany, Aurthur's blacksmithing skills were of great use to the small village, as they neighbored the training grounds of a great Vampire Slayer clan known as the Modans. The Modan clan was renouned throughout Europe, one of the most powerful and deadly clans of slayers in the world. Word of Aurthur's skills as a blacksmith traveled to the nearby Modan training camp, and the small village was visited by some of the Modan Elite's, including the Paladin, the leader of the clan. The Paladin spoke to Aurthur directly, stating the he was in need of a weapon and armor supplier in the area. Aurthur happily accepted the job, and was set up with a beautiful shop in the center of the village. The village's people were ecstatic by the news that the town was now under the protection of the Modan clan, and Aurthur became an overnight hero.

As the years passed, Kearney grew up to be quite the little swordsman. At the age of six, he was wielding a sword like most people thrice his age. At times, he and his friends would go out into the fields and play fight with sticks or wood carved play swords made by the woodsman in the village. All of their fighting and play swordsmanship was towards the end of becoming a great fighter, and becoming a slayer. This was the ultimate dream for any child in the village, as the slayer's were held in such high regard in the village. Kearney, encouraged by both his father and mother, continued to practice and wield small, light weapons that Aurthur sculpted for him. Little by little, his swordsmanship grew. At the age of eight, he was one of the best sword fighters in the village.

The following year, Kearney was nine years old, and the Modan Slayers visited the town and hosted a competition in the middle of the fields. The competition included all children under the age of 13. The competition was a sword fighting competition, and Kearney signed up immediately. 16 children came out to fight in this competition, and gain the approval of the Modans. As the fights wittled down, it was clear that Kearney was advancing in the ranks quickly. The final battle was between him and another child, one who was 12 years old, just under the age of maturity in the small village. Kearney and he did battle long and hard, but ultimately Kearney came out on top. Kearney had the oppurtunity to kill the child, but he did not, he simply let him go, and the Slayers were extremely impressed. They congratulated the child and rewarded him with a solid steel shield with the Modan Clan's insignia on it. Kearney was ecstatic, and as heavy as the shield was, he dragged it into his house.

News of Kearney's victory spread, and the village once again placed the Donnovan family in the spotlight, still appreciating Aurthur for his great contributions to the Slayer clan, and to Kearney's victory. As a symbol of Aurthur's pride in his son, he custom crafted a broadsword for Kearney. Made of solid steel construction, the sword was extremely heavy and not designed for him to use until he was an adult. Nonetheless, Kearney was thrilled. The sword was crafted with custom designs on the hilt and had lightning bolts etched into the face of the blade. Kearney was entranced by the sword, and he slept with it by his bed every night.

One night, Kearney was sleeping soundly as he did on any other night, his sword by his side. Kearney suddenly awoke when a chilling scream emanated from another place inside their home. Kearney sat up sharply and looked around. The scream came again, but it was suddenly muffled. Kearney dragged his sword into the other room to find the most horrifying image he has ever seen in his life. Two cloaked figures, mere silhouettes, were standing in the room. Aurthur, Kearney's father, lay dead on the floor, and Kearney noticed that he had two small puncture wounds in his neck. His mother was being held up like a rag doll by one of the silhouetted figures, the figure had it's mouth buried in his mother's neck. Kearney dropped his sword in shock, and the two vampires were aware of his existance. The whipped around towards him and approached him slowly, his parent's blood dripping down their pale chins. As they approached Kearney, the door to their home was obliterated as the villagemen came in with torches and pitchforks, responding to the scream. They saw the two bodies on the floor, and the two vampires stalking Kearney. The vampires hissed and quickly fled into the night at the sight of twenty some mortals wielding lit torches.

The next day the Modan Slayer's sent a small dispatch of warriors to the village to investigate. They discovered Kearney who had suddenly become an orphan, and upon recognizing him as the child who won the swordsmanship competition, took him in and raised him at the training camp. The Slayers allowed him to take his sword and shield. Upon viewing the sword, one of the slayer's remarked on the lightning bolts on the face of the blade, describing the lightning as light slashing the night sky. As every slayer was given a name to go by instead of their real name, it was decided the child would be called Nightslasher. As such, Nightslasher was taken to the clan Mage, who endowed him with the ability to manipulate electricity and lightning at his will.

Years passed, and Nightslasher had become one of the greatest Slayers in the clan's history. He was 21, and they praised him as a warrior day in and day out, and even some were talking that he might be the next Paladin. One day, Nightslasher came to his fellow bretheren and said he had to go on a quest. His goal was to find the two night crawlers that killed his parents and slay them once and for all. He left and was on this quest for four years until he stumbled on a little known place called the Vampire's Tavern...
