History

My life has been hard. People think that because I hurt other people I’m not a good person. Well, I try to be whenever I can, but I don’t have much choice over what I do and what I don’t do. My father has me hostage, in a sense. He holds my life in his hands, literally. Maybe not always in his hands, but in a special room that is within his own room that none can enter aside from him.

It’s a stave, hard and black. It pulsates with a definitive magic, one that gets right into your bones and sends shivers down your spine. The shape of it is long and curved so that it forms a hollow circle. Within the circle is a glassy pool of blood, one that leeches from the stave itself, or recedes within it depending on whether one dies or one is born. I have tried many times to get to the stave, but always I have failed. Gabriel won’t tell me how he got the piece that he has, but I do know the names that are on it.

Gabriel, Julian, Derrick, and Damian are on that stave. I know that if Gabriel hadn’t taken it decades ago Damian would not be here now. You see, Damian is mad. He’s crazy. He’s crazy enough to slap my father across the face for no reason, or throw mom’s freshly baked pies into the faces of an angry crowd. He’s my brother, and I care for him very much. I guess it’s better that Gabriel has the stave rather than my father. But he didn’t take my name. He left it there along with all the others. I know how much he hates me, and I can understand why he does. In fact, most everyone hates me. They would rather see me dead than beaten, but that’s just how life goes.

When I was ‘born’, Darwin picked me. Darwin being my father that is, the one who carved my name into the stave. He wanted me for himself, and he would train me to become his heir should anything happen to him. Dario, who was Darwin’s greatest nemesis, feared for the survival of Nethwal, and so he created two children of his own: Gabriel and Derrick. That was some time ago, almost too long ago for me to remember.

Okay, back to me. Darwin laid upon me all of his habits, all of his thoughts. It was a painful beginning for me. Every night Darwin would come to me, and he would beat me with whatever he happened to have handy. Usually he brought a whip with him, though he used the butt end of it. He raped me, too. I know he didn’t enjoy it, not in that sense. He enjoyed it because it made his victim feel low and helpless. He enjoyed it because it gave him power. Eventually I would be the same, just at the time I didn’t know it.

Gabriel thought he had it bad, and he did. But my torments were worse. Darwin went to Gabriel because he was bored, while I was being trained. He was literally beating the fight out of me, brainwashing me with his lectures, cutting away who I was piece by piece until chunks were falling. And then, one night…there was nothing left of me. Some people say that if you get beaten, there is always a chance to get up and face the terror again. I believed this, but that was a long time ago. Now…well, just take a look.

My first victim was Sarah. She was my sister, and I did love her very much. Father told me to kill her, though. He told me she was as useless as all the other women, and that she needed to be put down. I didn’t want to at first, but when he threatened to end my life I went ahead and did it.

Gabriel tried to stop me, as usual. He was always there, trying to end the terror that I reigned, but he was usually too late. I drowned Sarah in the river, and then Darwin cut her name from the stave. She was no more.

The next person I killed was my own mother. Darwin didn’t give me a reason this time, he just told me to do it. So I did, as I knew what he would do now if I didn’t obey him. I threw her down into a deep well, and then Gabriel tried to save her. He jumped into the well with her.

And then I killed Gabriel’s lover, Katarina. I used Gabriel’s dagger to do it, too. Given the choice I would have taken a dagger to the heart anytime over public stoning. I consider it a mercy kill.

That was the last straw for Gabriel. He started rebelling against everything Darwin asked him to do, whether that was setting the table or going upstairs to his room. As a result his beatings increased. I usually joined in, but found little joy in participating. Again, it all came down to life or death. I wanted to live.

It got to the point where Darwin got fed up enough that he placed a curse upon Gabriel. That same day he killed his father, Dario. And after that he was sold to a slave trader, and banished from Nethwal for all time. I didn’t see him for a long time after that, and after a while I stopped caring about what had happened to him.

From that point forward my life was uneventful, and I lived day to day, never making any goals for myself. I did what I was told, and nothing more than that.

I came to Earth, and did very little during that time. I found a lover, had children. All of them died along the way, and I would rather not remember it.

Now I have come to help Gabriel from the curse that has been placed upon him, so many years ago. But none trust me, all despise me. Can I blame them? No, I can’t. I have come to the Island several times, and I think I will be spending more and more time there. Someone needs to believe me before it’s too late for him.
