History: Brief
History: Devlin’s
past is one of winding riddles and half-truths. As a child, Devlin grew up in relative happiness with his
mother and father in Northeastern Ireland in the late 18th
century. At the age of 14,
Devlin found himself wandering through the (at that time) seldom-traveled
highlands where he came across a creature.
Resembling a wolf in appearance but much larger in size, Devlin
satisfied his natural curiosity by following the beast.
After a time, Devlin found himself in a totally foreign territory
following a creature which he could only assume was leading him as the
creature made no attempt to evade Devlin’s pursuit.
The creature was in fact a lycan and dear friend of his mother.
As
the day dwindled on, Devlin proceeded to follow the lycan into a cave.
Curious druidic scrawling adorned the mouth of the cave as well as
the interior. The passage
wound itself down and around and came to an opening at a dead end.
Devlin searched in the fading light but the lycan was nowhere to be
found. Aware of the dangers
of wandering the highlands at night, Devlin lay down upon the smooth floor
of the cave and went to sleep. As
he did so, the cave’s mouth slowly closed and the earth enveloped young
Devlin. There he lay for some
150 years, safe from the wars of the outside world, as was his loving
mother’s intent. As he
slept, Gaia spoke to him, erasing the memories of his father and mother a
new past was created for him, one that would be more in sync with the
world within which he would awaken. Devlin
awoke, a young man of twenty something, he emerged from the cave.
Groggy and disorientated he made his way through and down the
highlands to Derry. His
previous life discarded as nothing more than a dream Devlin returned to
his home knowing his parents had died on the streets of Belfast in a
terrorist’s bombing. Life
continued for Devlin, the seeds of his true existence and nature planted
deep within, hidden for the time being. Devlin
soon discovered an uneasy restfulness inherent in his nature.
Lacking a family and obligations, Devlin began traveling the
world… staying in any given location for no more than a few years at any
one time. Devlin soon
discovered he was unlike others. Devlin
aged differently… or not at all, as it seemed.
Gaia had planted within Devlin the nomadic nature that would help
keep his apparent eternal youthfulness a secret from the outside world.
Devlin was also vaguely aware of the future, as well as the
thoughts and wishes of others. These
were the shadows of the gifts handed down from his mother, having never
been able to hone them in his youth; they would remain dull reflections of
his true abilities throughout his life. Devlin
found his way to the United States in the early ‘80s. Unbenounced to him, a secret division of the CIA had become
aware of his existence and sought him out.
Captured and detained against his will Devlin was given ultimatums,
either become a tool of the government, or suffer execution.
Not willing to be anyone’s hired gun and suffering clinical
depression, Devlin chose death. After surviving the electric chair 3 times, lethal injection
twice, multiple gunshot wounds to the heart and the unpleasant almond
aroma of the gas chamber, Devlin changed his mind.
Devlin spent the next two years training under constant guard and
supervision. While executing
his first assignment, Devlin went rogue and disappeared of the CIA’s
radar. Within the next month,
7 of the CIA’s chief officers either disappeared or were found horribly
mutated in various locations around Washington D.C. Devlin
fully embraced his nomadic nature as he fled the United States.
He vowed never to speak of his involvement with the U.S.
government, but chose to take with him the tools of his newly learned
trade. Devlin is often
found wearing a skin tight, black sleeveless t-shirt (which was taken from
the CIA due to it’s ability to resist puncture) covered with a large
cotton sweater which helps hid the double holster clipped on the inner
side of his belt at the small of his back.
Two SiG Arms 9mm pistols rest comfortably with two additional clips
always within easy reach. While
not always in his presence, Devlin is often fond of carrying a cherished
Katana that he came across during his many years of travel.
Devlin’s pants are also made of a high-tech fiber lifted from the
CIA that was designed to resist puncture and fire.
However, nothing ever being perfect, Devlin does wear many scars
from run ins and bar room brawls. Falling
into one of his frequent depressions, Devlin began to search for meaning
in his life by finding those whom he’s loved and cherished over the
years. One specifically, a
young woman he knew only briefly, but has had a profound impact on himself
and his outlook on life. On a
chance happening, Devlin encountered an old friend of his mothers, the
lycan that he followed into the cave.
Not knowing whom the man was or the woman he claimed to be
Devlin’s true mother, Devlin accepted a book that his mother had in her
possession when she passed away. Inside
was a letter in an unknown language, and on the back of the letter, a map
of the Island. The stranger
expressed his knowledge of Devlin’s search and implied that the woman he
looked for might be found upon the island.
The next morning, with map in hand, Devlin took off for the East
Pacific.
